Mexican Housewife Beaten 40 Times for Sharing Her Faith

1/25/2024 Mexico (VOM) Gabriela lives in a rural village in Oaxaca, Mexico, where members of her Mixteca community adhere to a syncretistic blend of pagan practices and Roman Catholicism that is opposed to the true gospel. Because of her boldness in sharing her faith, she has been attacked by her neighbors as well as by her husband, who is embarrassed by her commitment to Christ. She has been beaten an estimated 40 times and hospitalized on several occasions for sharing her faith. Despite this opposition, she continues to make trips into the Mixteca regions of the mountains of Oaxaca to spread the gospel where few others can go. Please pray… Praise the Lord for Gabriela’s bold witness, strong faith, and perseverance. Pray that the Lord will strengthen Gabriela and encourage her in the midst of this strong Satanic opposition to her spreading the gospel. Pray that other in her community will be drawn to Jesus as she shares the true gospel and shows the love and forgiveness of Jesus to those who persecute her.

Mexico Church Planters Warned to Stop Evangelizing

5/4/2023   Mexico   (VOM) Mateo and Elena are church planters in Central Mexico. Their town is in a region known as the “Circle of Silence,” where Christians are routinely opposed by those who follow a syncretistic blend of Catholicism, animism and the occult. The couple has experienced hostility from their community because of their witness for Christ. Their tires have been slashed, their bank accounts have been hacked, and they recently received a threatening note to stop their evangelistic activities: “First warning. You must leave. You may not preach, you or your wife.” Men on motorcycles also threatened them with guns at their front door. The couple has two young daughters, ages 5 and 3, and their older daughter has been bullied at school because of her Christian faith. Please pray… Pray that the Lord will encourage Mateo and Elena at this difficult time and keep them and their children safe. Pray that Mateo and Elena will be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit as they seek to share the Gospel. Pray that the Lord will touch the hearts of some people in their town and draw them to Jesus.

Mexican Family Ostracized for their Christian Faith

5/19/2022   Mexico   (VOM) Flavio came to faith in Christ when someone gave him a Bible while seeking work in a city away from his home village. When he returned home, Flavio shared the gospel with his family, and they all trusted in Christ as well. The 12 people in Flavio’s family are the only Christians in their village. Because many of Flavio’s family members suffer from a degenerative disease that causes paralysis, others in their village blame the family’s illness on their faith in Christ. Villagers also refuse to shop in the family’s small store because of their Christian beliefs. Please pray… Pray that the Lord will heal the family members of their disease. Pray for Flavio and his family to remain firm in their faith amid hostility from their community. Pray that their faithful witness will lead others to trust in Christ.

Mexican Evangelist Risks Life to Spread the Gospel

1/20/2022   Mexico   (VOM) Roberto is an indigenous evangelist who takes the gospel to communities where others will not go. He walks for days to reach these communities, often with little or no food, communication, or adequate medical care. His ministry is dangerous, and he has suffered beatings as well as ongoing threats because of his work sharing the gospel in unreached remote communities. Persecution is common against those who become Christians in these indigenous communities that practice a mixture of indigenous shamanistic religion and Roman Catholicism. Please pray… Pray for Roberto as he faithfully bears witness to Christ amid difficult and dangerous circumstances. Pray for his protection as he takes the gospel into hostile communities. Pray that many will come to trust in Christ through Roberto’s faithful witness.

Displaced Christians in Mexico Share the Gospel

4/9/2020  Mexico  (VOM) More than a year after being expelled from their village because of their faith, a group of Christians is now sharing the gospel with their new neighbors. While a few families in the original group abandoned their faith for the promise of getting all their possessions back from the villagers, the other families remain strong in their faith. Two families moved into homes provided by a local church, while seven other families moved onto property owned by a local Christian. Several of those families have since moved into permanent housing and opened a small grocery store, which provides not only an income but also a means of sharing the gospel in their community. Please pray… Praise God for these families that have remained faithful to Jesus and for His provision for them. Pray that the Lord will bless the grocery store business and also use these families to share the gospel with many people in their neighborhood. Pray for the families that turned their backs on Jesus in order to get their homes and possessions back. Pray that they will see that Jesus is worth more than any earthly possessions, repent, and begin to live for Him again.

Christian Family Takes Refuge in Mountains after Expulsion from their Home in Mexico

8/15/2019  Mexico  (Morning Star News) Miguel Pérez Díaz, his eight children and 87-year-old father have been living in a mountainside shack since May, when local officials expelled them from their village in Chiapas state, Mexico. Relatives and neighbors have been harassing them for leaving indigenous religious practices to become Christians. Leaving the “traditionalist” blend of Roman Catholic and indigenous rituals and beliefs, the Pérez family put their faith in Christ four years ago and began a small fellowship in their home. The family loaded the few belongings their neighbors allowed them to take and headed into the mountains, where they survive by collecting the morning dew and rain water that falls from the metal roof of the shanty they built. Despite leaving their home, they must still pay 500 pesos (US$26/¥3000) each month to keep authorities from taking possession of their house and remaining belongings, sources said. Their case is one of thousands in which indigenous Mexican families that have been driven from their homes and lost all their belongings because they have put their faith in Jesus. Mexico ranks 39th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2019 World Watch List of the 50 countries where Christians experience the most persecution. Please pray… Pray that the Lord will provide for the material needs of Miguel Pérez Díaz and his […]

Mexican Christians Forced from Homes and Farmland

9/20/2018   Mexico  (VOM) Authorities in Chiapas have forced nearly 30 Christians out of their homes and off their farmland simply because they are Christians. The families, who are also losing most of their personal belongings, are being humiliated, beaten and detained for days at a time by local government authorities. A VOM partner is prepared to help with short-term housing and food, but long-term solutions are needed. Please pray… Pray that these brothers and sisters will continue to place their trust in Christ as their earthly possessions are taken away. Pray that they will find new housing and sources of income. Pray that their faith will be a light to those watching their mistreatment.

Mexican Evangelical Churches and Communities Deprived of Electricity

01/26/2017   Washington, D.C.  (ICC) International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that on Sunday, January 22, a house church in Chiapas, Mexico, had its electrical services cut off by the local town leadership. Evangelical Christians are excluded by local leadership from attending town assemblies, claiming that the former have no right to participate in those meetings. Appeals and requests have been made to the state authorities to intervene and remedy the situation, but concrete action has not been taken to address the problems of religious discrimination. The federal government has offered to cover the cost of any local fines imposed on the affected individuals, in the hopes that this will at least prompt municipal leaders to refrain from targeting evangelical minorities. Please pray… Pray that the Christians will respond to this persecution with love. Pray that the federal government will continue to help by paying the fines charged to the church. Pray that the citizens in the neighborhood will have a change of heart and acknowledge the right of the church to meet and exist.
