Al-Shabab Kidnaps and Kills Christian Man in Kenya

12/11/2023   Kenya   (ICC) Suspected al-Shabab terrorists kidnapped and killed a 60-year-old Christian man, Mutemi Kunga, on December 5. They likely abducted him to learn where other Christians lived in the village so they could kill them, too. Fearing an attack, the other villagers hid in the bushes, and during the night they heard gunshots. When Mutemi’s family returned home in the morning, they found his body outside the house and all their goats and chickens killed. Their house was also burnt down. Residents are deeply concerned that the attacks will continue. The attack occurred ten days after a similar incident happened in the same village. At that time, two Christians were killed and 14 houses set on fire. The Christian population in the region has endured a series of religiously-motivated terror attacks since June 2023, compelling thousands to flee their homes and in September, a church building was burnt to the ground, and a village pastor was killed a month later. Please pray… Pray for the Lord to comfort the family of Mutemi Kunga as they grieve the loss of Mutemi as well as their home and animals. Pray that the Lord will provide for their material needs and […]

Kenya Islamists Burn Widow’s Home a Second Time

11/23/2023   Kenya   (VOM) Radical Islamic groups based in Somalia regularly attack Christians in Kenya who live near the border. Late in the evening of January 2, 2022, al-Shabab terrorists from Somalia broke into a house, pulled out a Kenyan father of four named Joseph and questioned him about his religion. When Joseph boldly declared that he was a Christian, they beheaded him. They then threatened his wife, Grace, and set the home ablaze. On September 26, 2023, terrorists returned to the village and destroyed Grace’s rebuilt home. They also killed her neighbor and burned five more homes. Grace and her children were away at the time. This is what saved her life and the lives of her children. A local pastor’s life has also been threatened and that the situation in the town is tense due to lack of security. Please pray… Praise the Lord that Grace and her children were not at home when the terrorists attacked. Pray for the Lord to comfort her and encourage her, and that He will comfort the family of her martyred neighbor and those who lost their homes. Pray for the Lord’s protection over the pastor and his family, and that the government […]

Kenya Muslims Stone Church, Pastor’s Home

10/5/2023   Kenya   (VOM) Pastor Matthew leads a small church in northern Kenya. Every Sunday when he preaches, Muslims from the surrounding neighborhood throw rocks at the church building. They occasionally throw stones at the home where he, his wife and their four children live. Their family and other Christians in the town are regularly discriminated against, especially at funerals, which are usually community events. Pastor Matthew recalled attending a funeral where he was served a meal and sat down to eat with a group of men. The other men immediately stood up and left him to dine alone, saying they would never eat with a “pagan”. Despite the ostracism and assaults, Pastor Matthew persists in ministry activities, including helping translate the Bible into local dialects. He said, “God is faithful in providing for our personal and ministry needs in miraculous ways beyond our expectations.” Please pray… Praise the Lord for Pastor Matthew’s faithful service to his small flock in Kenya. Pray that the Lord will protect him and his family, and that they will be encouraged in the Spirit. Pray that they can continue to have a faithful witness in their village and that the Lord will draw more […]

Kenyan Christians Hope to Build a Church

1/5/2023   Kenya   (VOM) A church in a Kenyan town with a significant Muslim population has met for years underneath a tree, and the group desperately needs a building. The church was founded in 2017 by a Kenyan missionary in the yard of his first convert. The Kenyan missionary who started the church received a lot of intimidation and mockery. He was marked to be killed, called a fool, and accused of misleading others because of sharing the gospel. The first church member came to Christ when she was healed of a prolonged sickness after the missionary prayed for her. The woman had spent much money seeking a cure, including paying seven goats to local magicians and visiting Islamic sheikhs who recited the Quran over her. After she was healed, the church grew and now has nearly 50 members. Please pray… Praise God for the faithful missionary who shared the gospel with the sick woman and for God’s healing her. Praise God for the way the church has grown. Pray that God will protect them and that they will be able to buy or build a building in which to meet for worship, prayer and fellowship.

Kenyan Congregation Moving from Police Station to New Building

9/29/2022   Kenya   (VOM) Christians in a northern Kenyan village are rejoicing as they begin construction on a new church. In this area, death threats and persecution from Muslim neighbors had forced them to meet in the safety of a local police station. The construction of a new church building is a step toward the full acceptance of Christianity in the village. When work on the new building began, some young Muslim men opposed to the church’s construction confronted the church’s leaders. When the church leaders went to the local police for assistance, the chief of police told the young Muslims, “Every citizen has the right to worship in a way that he or she believes is the true and the right way.” This support from the police has encouraged local believers who are looking forward to the opening of the new church building. Please pray… Pray that the Lord will bless the ministry and evangelistic outreach of the new church. Pray that the Lord will protect the Christians and the church from radical Muslims. Pray that the police will continue to stand up for the rights of the Christians to worship as they want to.

The assailants first kidnapped a well-known Christian, and then three other Christian men. They burned all four men to death in one of the men’s shops. They then went to the homes of the four men, and two other Christian men. After beheading one of the men, they went to another Christian’s home and burned him to death in his house. They then burned down the homes of the other men they had killed. Christians Face New Threats Along Somali Border

4/30/2020  Kenya  (ICC) Christians in the Kenya-Somalia border region are concerned about new threats and attacks by the Somali militant group al-Shabab. The militants released a video recently in which they threatened “infidels” coming into the region, calling the settlement of Christians in Muslim areas “Kenyan colonization.” Kenyan teachers and other professionals were withdrawn from two counties near the Somali border recently, and local churches in another county have stopped meeting. When Christian workers met to discuss a plan of action, however, they agreed to stay and continue their work despite the risk. Kenya’s economically-challenged border region is populated with people of Somali origin, but the Kenyan government sends teachers, police and other government workers from elsewhere in Kenya to serve there. Many of these workers are Christians. Please pray… Pray that the Lord will strengthen and encourage these faithful Christians who have decided to stay and help the poor in the Kenya-Somalia border region. Pray that they will be able to share the love of Christ with the Somali Muslims they are working with and that some will respond and trust in Christ. Pray that the Kenyan government will do more to protect the Christians working along the border with Somalia.

Christians Slain in Suspected Al Shabaab Attack in Northern Kenya

12/9/2019  Kenya  (Morning Star News) Members of Somali Islamic extremist group Al Shabaab stopped a bus in northern Kenya on Dec. 6, separated out those who were not local ethnic Somali Muslims and executed them. The bus had 56 people aboard when it was. A witness who escaped said that the assailants separated out 11 Kenyan workers from the interior (assumed to be Christians) from local residents, assumed to be ethnic Somali Muslims. Two of the victims were teachers identified as evangelical Christians. A third victim was a doctor who belonged to an Africa Inland Church. Other victims included police officers. One survivor said he was not killed because a Somali Muslim man gave him some Somali clothing to wear. Please pray… Pray for the families of those who were slain, that the Lord would comfort and strengthen them. Pray that the Kenyan government will do more to protect people within its borders from attacks by Somalian terrorists. Pray that the Christians in Kenya will not lose heart, but will find strength, hope and peace in Jesus.

Kenya Muslim Driver Saves Eight Christians from al-Shabaab Attack

10/25/2019  Kenya   (ICC) Eight construction workers in Kenya barely escaped a terror attack at the hands of al-Shabaab, a Somali-based militant group. Seeing the 10 heavily-armed men flagging down the workers’ vehicle, the Muslim driver quickly decided to ignore them and drove away off to save the targeted Christian passengers and himself. The terrorists shot at the van and punctured one of the tires, but the driver kept going. This is the second time a local Muslim has saved the lives of Christians this year from al-Shabaab terrorists. One of the Christian workers said, “We thank God that the driver, Hassan Abdul, did not stop to sacrifice us to the enemy. His act of love has touched our hearts in a way we shall never forget.” Please pray… Praise God for the bravery and kindness of Hassan Abdul, and pray that the Lord will touch his heart and draw him to Himself.  Pray that the Lord will protect the Christians who are traveling to this part of Kenya to work. Pray that the Lord will speak to the hearts of the al-Shabaab terrorists in dreams and visions to show them He is the one true God.

Muslims in Kenya Give Christian Family One Day to Return to Islam

11/23/2018  Kenya (Morning Star News) “We were given a day to either recant the Christian faith or face the sword,” said Abdul Abu-Bakr, a married father of two. Abu-Bakr had suffered a serious illness for more than two months, visiting various hospitals without improving, when a pastor prayed for him in Jesus’ name. The next day, his entire family decided to place their faith in Christ for salvation from sin. The town mosque learned that they had converted to Christ, and that very day he received threatening messages that the Muslims were planning to kill the whole family. The couple have hidden their children in a place of refuge. Abu-Bakr and his wife are concerned about how they will obtain schooling for their children, he said. “We do not know what to do – no home, no food, threatened with death, and our children away from us,” he said. “At times we are lacking peace. My wife has been having sleepless nights thinking about the children. We really need prayers to remain in the Christian faith and the peace that comes from God.” Please pray… Pray that Abu-Bakr and his family will be strengthened in their new faith and comforted by […]
