Iran Leaked Documents Show How Government Targets Christian Converts

Leaked cases of more than 300 Christians in Iran charged with crimes related to their faith show how the vast majority, converts from Islam, are targeted. About 90 percent of the 327 Christians prosecuted for their faith during the past 15 years are converts. The 327 cases relate only to the Tehran region, they represent a mere fraction of the total number of Christians who were arrested. At least seven of these were ordained ministers. The most common charge (86%) was “propaganda against the state [by promoting Christianity].” That was followed by membership in house churches (69%), and being a leader of a house church (58%). Other charges include “insulting Islamic sanctities,” “collusion against national security,” “insulting the Supreme Leader,” and “apostasy.” The managers of three online shops selling Christian books were charged with “selling deviant evangelistic materials” and “hurting public modesty and morals through the display, promotion and sale of evangelistic books and items.” The leaked documents reveal that officials routinely label ordinary Christian worship as “cultic,” “anti-revolutionary” or a “security risk”. Iran ranked ninth on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian.

Please pray…

  • Pray that the Lord will bless and encourage the Christians in Iranian prisons with His presence, joy and peace.

  • Pray that they will not lose heart but will be bright witnesses to their fellow inmates.

  • Pray that the gospel messages and Bible teaching that is available on the Internet in Iran will reach millions of Iranians with the truth of God’s Word and that many will be saved.
